Keepin it Fresh (and Easy!)

Just before the spring break in which I left my house for a week, I had the crazy urge to finally try planting my own herbs as houseplants. Maybe it was because I was done with finals or because I couldn't take having it on my mental "to do" list any longer. For whatever reason I went shopping for them even though I knew I would then leave them for a week immediately after without asking my neighbors to water them because I didn’t have time. It seems that I sometimes cannot see reason when I want to try an idea. So I blundered around town without really a plan as to which herbs I would even like to have. I found myself in a Bi-mart parking lot plant sale. There they were, fresh mint and hearty rosemary plants all under two dollars. I somehow restrained myself from crazily buying a ton of plants and chose one mint and one rosemary. When I got home my soon-to-be-sister-in-law and I began to make a dirty mess hoping my roommate would not enter to find us using our kitchen table. I really didn’t know what I was doing. I found a couple of my “mistake” pots from my pottery endeavors and simply pulled the plant from its plastic pot, plucked apart the roots, and plopped it in some dirt I had just scooped from our backyard. After we had made sure all the roots where covered in dirt we cleaned up. That’s when I remembered that planting pots should have drainage. After stating this fact, I looked at Ariel and we both shrugged our shoulders and I left for spring break expecting them to die. I have had the plants for over a month now and they are still strong as ever despite their quick re-potting experience.
The moral of the story: Herbs are easy to grow on your own!
