The other day I was required to find what plant products were in a household item for my Botany course. I decided to use my "natural shampoo" which I thought I had a good idea of what was in it. Naturally, there was not a natural thing about it. This spurred my interest in making my own shampoo. I found a recipe online with a castile soap base mixed with tea, eggs, coconut oil and water. At first I almost disregarded it because I was so grossed out by putting raw egg in my hair. But then I couldn't come up with a way to leave the egg out and still have the shampoo be thick enough.
I spent about a 1/2 hour putting together the ingredients and it came out this sick brown color. I still decided to try it out. At first it had no suds to it. I got grossed out and frustrated, "Why did I even decide to put this slime in my hair in the first place?!? And "What my roommate must think of me."
Almost out of a giving up attitude I put around 3 more tablespoons of castile soap (after all, what else would I use it for) into the mix and tried it again. This time it suds perfectly! And it made my hair much easier to manage. It smelled a little funny when I was drying my hair because of the green tea I used. I think next time I will use a Chia or other that smells a little better with my hair.
I put the mix in an old glass bottle I had and it looks cute despite its puke color.
And even though it will take me 15-30 minutes each week to make the stuff, its one less item on my grocery list and I know exactly what is in it.
Homemade Shampoo
1 organic egg
1 teaspoon organic coconut oil
1 teaspoon lemon juice or grapefruit juice
1 tablespoon castile soap
1/2 cup water or herbal tea
Drop of fragrant essential oil of your choice (optional)
Combine all in blender and whip until smooth. Shampoo with mixture using warm, not hot water for the shampoo and rinse. Store any remaining shampoo in the refrigerator for use the next day.
*For dry hair: add a little arrow root to the mix to soak up your oils.
